October
Architectural Furniture Show
As of Sunday afternoon nineteen pieces, and possibly twenty
three pieces, are pledged to an October Architectural Furniture
Show. Assuming the majority of these are sizable pieces, we may
indeed have enough.
Will the each of the people who have pledged pieces get back to
me with the type of piece that they will submit, or
at least the approximate size of piece? Is anyone interested in
submitting a model or maquette? We have an
adequate number, but I am still concerned as to whether we can fill
the gallery.

Bill First and John Sirovatka will not be able to
participate. CFDA Space For Rent?
CFDA has the opportunity to rent for about
$200.00 per month a smallish back room in a furniture gallery called
the Aesthetic Eye located at 1520 W. Chicago Avenue in Chicago. This
issue has been discussed at several prior CFDA meetings.
I visited the gallery on a Saturday from about
1-2pm. It is very beautiful (in my opinion). I will have photos at
the meeting on May 9.
How good a venue is this? While I was there,
no one else came into the gallery. The gallery is located in a
relatively low income, but gentrifying area. The prices for the
works displayed are quite high. I can not believe the gallery gets
any significant business from the local neighborhood. The gallery
owner told me that last April was the first month in which the
gallery generated receipts greater than the monthly rent the gallery
owes to its landlord. This reminds me of my own experience. In 1996
I rented a small retail store right in the downtown area of
Clarendon Hills, a high income village, but neither the traffic nor
the revenue was good.
Hours of operation are Thursdays 6-9pm, Fridays
12-9 PM, Saturdays 11-6pm, and Sundays 11-4pm.
The space we might rent would have to be
partitioned off from another part of the back room. It would have to
be painted, lighted, and in general fixed up. Who would do this work
and who would pay for it?
Who would man the back room during business
hours? Someone from CFDA? Unlikely. Perhaps gallery employees would
conduct sales for us. How would the mechanics of such an arrangement
be handled?
Obviously, display space is extremely limited,
so (assuming sufficient interest) a method of determining which CFDA
members could display their work for what periods of time would have
to be worked out.
Members wanting to display their work in this
space would have to commit to pay CFDA for the privilege of doing so
in amounts sufficient to reimburse it for its rental expense, or do
this and provide CFDA with some sort of profit.
If there was more demand than the space could
accommodate, who would get to participate, and on what basis?
Would CFDA want to jury the work placed in the
space?
Would CFDA attempt to market its presence in
the space, and if so, how, and at whose expense?
PLEASE REVIEW AND THINK ABOUT THE ABOVE AND BE
PREPARED TO DISCUSS THE MATTER AT THE NEXT MEETING ON MAY 9. WE NEED
TO KNOW WHETHER OR NOT TO PROCEED WITH THIS AT THAT TIME. IF YOU CAN
NOT ATTEND THE MEETING, PLEASE E-MAIL ME YOUR THOUGHTS NOT LATER
THAN MAY 8.
