September 13 Meeting—

INDIA, A LAND WITHOUT FURNITURE
a slide show and talk by Tor Faegre
Though village India appears to lack much of what we call furniture, a closer
look reveals a rich and ancient tradition of woven furniture--chairs, beds,
bolsters---as well as built-ins of mud, straw and stone. Pictures of the
furniture, the artisans and examples of my own work inspired by these. Based on a
series of trips to India in search of traditional crafts.

Oct. 11—Ancient Wood From New Zealand. Many of us have seen the ads for the lumber produced from ancient logs, some 50,000 years old, which have been harvested from a peat bog in New Zealand. Art Teisberg of Ancient Wood, who is distributing this material in North America will tell the story of this lumber, show pictures of the operation and samples of the lumber.

Nov. 15—Bruce Tharp, who designed the Bone Lamp, made from PVC plastic, which got so much recognition at the Sustainable Furniture Show, will make a presentation of his work. Bruce is rapidly making a name for himself as a designer. He is new to the CFDA. It will be good to get to know both him and the work he has done beyond the Bone Lamp.

 Execute Board Election

Coming up in September is the election of the Executive Board.  The CFDA members elect our ten member Executive Board, which in turn selects the CFDA officers.  Currently the Board members are:  Antanas Abraitis, Jeff Miller, Sean Scott, Lee Weitzman, Lloyd Natof, John Kriegshauser, Helen-Maria Nugent, Maxine Snyder, Burt Engelberg and Pradeep Shimpi.  Many of these members will want to serve again, but they will have to stand for reelection.   Others will step down creating automatic vacancies.  If you are interested in serving on the Board please contact John Kriegshauser, so your name can be placed in nomination.

Also, it’s time to consider if you would be willing to serve as a CFDA officer or committee chairperson.  The appointment of these officers will occur in October.

A request for information re the specific pieces selected for the Saslow Show will be forwarded to John Sirovatka .

The dates and methods available for breakdown of the Sustainability Show at the Cultural Center were discussed. It will be possible to take things out of the CC during the week after 8/14, but John Kriegshauser will send out an email to get names and preferred dates so as to alert the CC Security staff. The major effort will occur on 8/21 at which time we willl have a truck to take both furniture pieces and platforms. Anyone who is able and willing to take and use or store one or more platforms should do so.

    Elections:

Elections for the two or three places on the Board of Directors will be coming up in Sept. Volunteers and/or nominees are needed. Some positions on the CFDA officers and committees also need to be filled, especially the webmaster. The president will email the members re volunteers for officers and committees and John Kriegshauser will do the same re volunteers for the Bd.

It was noted that the list of members needs to be updated.

New Business:

The program for the evening was presented by John Kriegshauser on the use of models as well as sketches, drawings, and renderings. A number of models for chairs and tables were shown and the relative merits of models versus drawings were discussed. Models are of value as a supplement to and clarification of problems that may or may not show up in drawings. Models help to bring out structural factors such as strength, rigidity, and feasibility. They may help clients to visualize and resolve doubts. John also emphasized that there must be clarity in the question the model is intended to solve.

Sean Scott presented his experience with model buildirrg and the use computer programs to both draw and also create renderings that provide models in virtual reality suitable for photography. He also pointed out that it is important to scale the model on the piece of material that is a given ( such as the thickness of the glass to be used for the model’s table top).

Robert Frazier presented a model designed to provide a joint with equal strength in three dimensions, or directions, which then served as the basis for design of a matrix construction.

The meeting adjourned at 8:30.. Tor Faegre announced that he would present the program at the next meeting on the furniture of India, a society that essentially lives on the ground.

Respectfully submitted
