CFDA 2/8/05 - Membership Meeting Report
Dan Kowalik
| Attendees:
Bruce Harigan Announcements Sustainability Show 33 pieces have been entered as of 2-1-05 CFDA members: Website We need to look into the phone number that is listed on the website. Guest Speaker Andrew J. Pace AFM Safecoat makes paints, stains, clear coatings and sealers. All of these products offer low VOC and very safe low odor products. AFM products are used in highly sensitive areas such as hospitals where out-gassing may cause problems with patients. Why Most Coatings Out-Gas: because coatings have certain parts called "Monomers" these monomers combine during curing (drying) of the paint to achieve hardness. If the Monomers don't fully mix/cure then the uncured portions will out-gas. A typical paint may out-gas for 2-5 years. Another thing to keep in mind is that most materials that are called "water based" are only comprised of at least 50% water and usually contain large amounts of acetone and or ammonia. By law since the manufacturer has at least 50% water they do not need to disclose other contents such as acetone or ammonia. Andrew gave a wonderful presentation giving us all great insight into
coatings. |
