- Meeting/Program Schedule  (John Kriegshauser)

Program Schedule
March 8-Evan Lewis
Evan makes furniture of steel. His work often includes forging as well as welding. He is no slave to standard steel sections, nor is he afraid of curves. In fact his work often verges on the baroque. Nor does he shy away form the unconventional. The last piece he showed with the CFDA was a cabinet with panels of pony hide!
Evan is, however, a slave to his studio. We are privileged that he has agreed to pry himself away from the coals and make this rare public experience. Don't waste this unique opportunity to hear the artist present his work in his own words.

April 12-Bill First
Bill is a photographer as well as a furniture designer/craftsman. As many of us already know, Bill teaches photography at Columbia College. Bill will speak about photographing furniture and assembling a photographic portfolio in the age of digital photography. I observed Bill as he recently took some pictures for me, and I learned a lot.

AFM Safecoat makes paints, stains, clear coatings and sealers. All of these products offer low VOC and very safe low odor products. AFM products are used in highly sensitive areas such as hospitals where out-gassing may cause problems with patients.

Why Most Coatings Out-Gas: because coatings have certain parts called "Monomers" these monomers combine during curing (drying) of the paint to achieve hardness. If the Monomers don't fully mix/cure then the uncured portions will out-gas. A typical paint may out-gas for 2-5 years.

Another thing to keep in mind is that most materials that are called "water based" are only comprised of at least 50% water and usually contain large amounts of acetone and or ammonia. By law since the manufacturer has at least 50% water they do not need to disclose other contents such as acetone or ammonia.

Andrew gave a wonderful presentation giving us all great insight into coatings.
