- Meeting/Program Schedule (John Kriegshauser)
August 9 Meeting—Using Models in Furniture
Design. John
Kriegshauser will show how he used models in the development of several
furniture projects. Sean
Scott and Amy Calvanese also have some models to show.
If you have made models to aid in the development of your design
projects, please bring them along, and share your experience.
With all the excitement over computer aided design we are
inclined to overlook the power models afford us for design development
and presentation. September 12 Meeting—The Folk Furniture of India. Tor Faegre will give us a rare treat. He will share with us his journeys across India documenting the vigorous furniture craft traditions of that sprawing, culturally diverse country. The date is still tentative, but watch for this one; it will be something special Execute Board Election Coming up in September is the election of the
Executive Board. The CFDA
members elect our ten member Executive Board, which in turn selects the
CFDA officers. Currently
the Board members are: Antanas
Abraitis, Jeff Miller, Sean Scott, Lee Weitzman, Lloyd Natof, John
Kriegshauser, Helen-Maria Nugent, Maxine Snyder, Burt Engelberg and
Pradeep Shimpi. Many of
these members will want to serve again, but they will have to stand for
reelection. Others
will step down creating automatic vacancies.
If you are interested in serving on the Board please contact John
Kriegshauser, so your name can be placed in nomination. |

Sustainability ShowSustainable Furniture Show BreakdownThe show was predicted to have over 20,000 visitors, and the guards tell me that attendance continues strong. The real total is not yet available, but the curators are very happy with attendance, and we will likely exceed expectations. Several people have reported sales and inquiries as a result of the show. Please report any response you get to me, so we can determine the commercial value of all of our efforts. The show will close at the end of the day on August 14. Sunday, August 21 will be the day that we haul the furniture from the Cultural Center. Once again we will use the parking lot adjacent to Lloyd Natof’s workshop as the distribution point. Two shipments will be required, so we will probably do one beginning late morning and one mid afternoon. Please respond to me ASAP and confirm your preference. Would you prefer to participate in the first pick up, maybe 11:00-2:00, or the second pick up, maybe 2:00-5:00. Plans are still in flux, so feel free to suggest your preferences. Some people will prefer to retrieve their pieces individually. Remember that the Chicago Cultural Center loading dock is often congested. Also, there may be issues getting your pieces through security. Let me know if you plan to get your piece individually, so I can notify the CCC security staff to expect you. Also, there’s the matter of the bases. Lloyd has the ability to store most if not all of these, but if anyone has another use for them or for the material in them, please speak up. It will be a gigantic job to haul these things. Judy S. Show Judy will hand pick pieces from the Sustainability Show for October Artist month running at her gallery from Oct. 21st to Dec. 21st. John S. will receive a list from Judy and will send out an email to all artists that have been picked. We will need to decide on several issues for the Judy S. show:
Guest Speaker Carl Boyd on Normal Design: Carl and his partner, Liam Hawry, formed their design practice with the expressed intention of developing products with minimal environmental impact. In the process they have familiarized themselves with the recyclable aspects of many of today's plastics. This is an area of design few of our members are familiar with, so come on and get informed about the materials of the 21st Century! Very interesting integration of creative design and “green” materials making beautiful furniture that is fun. Carl gave an organized presentation that went through some of the processes and also talked about the philosophy of his company. Great job Carl, the presentation was fun, well organized and filled with detail. The CFDA would like to thank you for informing us about the materials of the 21st Century.
