I am anticipating the meeting to start at the same time (6:30) and go from there. If enough people are interested, I can get some sub sandwiches for people to eat since we won't have any dinner options. There is a decent place near by which has Italian and American subs that run about $3.00. Once at Bretford, I will try and be at the main doors under the Awning. If I am not there, please try to dial my ext or call me on my cell (773-593-3150) Please try to arrive on time or early, as once we start the meeting and the tour, there will be no way to contact me in order to let people in.

Sustainable Furniture Show - John Kriegshuaser

The Cultural Center has finally given us a date for the Sustainable Furniture Show. It will open at the beginning of May 2005. That gives us just seven months to design and build pieces! Oh, such happy work! But, if you haven't been actively thinking about this yet, there is not a moment to waste.

Perhaps we can share different perspectives on this design effort at our October and November meetings. I know I have run aground with two of the ideas I have been pursuing. Perhaps brainstorming as a group can identify some creative alternatives.

CFDA Board Election - John Kriegshauser

The current members of the Board, who are available for reelection are:

  • Antanas Abraitis who operates his own furniture studio. Antanas has served as our president for the past two years.
  • Tim Cozzens who teaches at Columbia College and, until recently maintained a commercial furniture and fixture shop.
  • Burt Engelberg a local attorney who has helped us with our not-for-profit status.
  • John Kriegshauser who teaches at IIT and makes speculative and commissioned furniture from his home shop. John is the current Chairman of the Board
  • Jeff Miller who runs a custom furniture business, an apprentice program and, as many of us know, has written several books published by Taunton Press. Jeff was formerly Chairman of the Board.
  • Pradeep Shimpi who calls his custom furniture and design business Shiani. Pradeep has been a former president and founding member of the organization.
  • Maxine Snider who teaches at the Art Institute and maintains an interior design business. Maxine is also a founding member of the organization.
  • Lee Weitzman who has moved from being a designer/craftsman to designer/retailer. Lee is also a founding member of the organization.

The Board's membership is to be ten, so two more members are needed. Efforts have been made to recruit candidates, but to date only one has been identified. Perhaps we can have some nominated from the floor? The new candidate is:

  • Helen-Maria Nugent who teaches at the Art Institute and has served as our program chairman.

August 10 Meeting minutes - Chris Brandel

In attendance were: John Sirovatka, Jan Sopoci, Bill First, Chris Brandel, Michael Obrecht, Pete Lambert, Antanas Abraitis

Last meeting was an excellent one. The meeting began with Committee reports and general news.

The committees which had significant updates were the events committee. John Sirovatka has helped give the Judy Saslow Show a great boost. Through his relentless efforts, he has gained enough members commitments to hold the show. He has already accepted all entry concepts and will be turning them into the gallery for approval. For all of us who missed the boat on this one, we have missed a great opportunity.

In other news, Dan Kowalik  has accepted the position of CFDA Secretary. Dan is excited about the opportunity to help out the organization and his assistance will be greatly welcomed. Please join us in saying a Thank You to Dan for dedicating his time to helping us out. For anyone else interested in helping out with committees and or positions, please contact one of the officers and we will be happy to find ways in which you can help.

In anticipation of the Upcoming Chicago Cultural Society Show, the rest of the meeting was devoted to discussions on Sustainability. It was an excellent round table discussion with topics being discussed involving general and fine details of sustainability along with ideas on how the show can be organized and promoted within the CFDA.. It was also discussed that we should go ahead with planning for the show idea no matter if the Cultural Center decided to host the event or not. We felt there are many other possible locations to hold the show if it fell through or if we wanted to have other shows with similar topics. Other topics included in the discussion were the idea of juried entries, general discussion groups of ideas on non-regular CFDA meeting dates, how Chicago is becoming a green city and the shift of architects and designers moving towards sustainable practices.. A list of some information on sustainability will be posted at a later date, however, the best place to discuss these ideas will be at the CFDA general meetings or in the proposed discussion groups. These round table discussions often involve too much information to get down in meeting notes, so if you are interested in participating in the show, or want to learn more about this topic, please attend our upcoming meetings.

Topics to consider when addressing sustainability in furniture:

Materials:

  • Renewable and/or abundant material - e.g. Bamboo
  • Biodegradable materials
  • Fallen trees
  • Minimize toxic emissions from product
  • Produce furniture to last generations
  • Durability
  • multi-use
  • Classic designs

Processes:

  • Minimize production waste - computer assistance
  • Redirect landfill waste to other reusable material
  • environmentally friendly - less toxic material
  • Minimize use of fossil fuels to produce piece, as well as for shipping
  • Oversea outsourcing - pros/cons

Recycling:

  • Reuse of materials in construction tear-downs
  • Reuse of lumber
  • Reuse of older furniture components
  • Consider how well does your old furniture get recycled - dismantled and reused
